Anzac Day, lest we forget. Thank you to all who have fought for our freedom and the values we hold dear. May we always remember the sacrifices you have made for us.

We arrived at Esperance today. We have heard so much about it, how nice it is, those instagram type photos of beautiful blue skies, crystal clear turquoise water with white sand. The jewel in the south eastern corner of Western Australia. We were looking forward to seeing this gem and to be away from the flies and dust.

We were not disappointment with our first impression, indeed blue skies, white sand and clear water. We stopped for lunch near the Esperance Jetty, lovely lush green grass, a lovely change from the last few weeks. Walked up to the visitor centre and got some information.

Then to our caravan park we had booked in for the next four nights. Unfortunately it was a bit disappointing, we didn’t read the reviews before we booked, focussed on price and the fact that they let us share a site, thus reducing the cost individually. The issue and the bad reviews were about the cleanliness of the place, Amenities really were very dirty. Because of this we opted to pay a few dollars more and get an ensuite site. They were dirty as well and I had to clean it.

We spent the next day catching up on washing and cleaning. With Anzac day, and then Sunday and Monday being the public holiday nothing much was open.

Monday woollies was open so we were able to stock up the pantry, then did the Great Ocean Drive a 40 kilometre circular loop that includes the stunning coast line and the not so pink, Pink Lake. Unfortunately it was very overcast with rain on the way. It would be really stunning if the sky was blue and we got to see the amazing turquoise water. Still amazing to see but not those instagram shots.

Dempster Head.

Many of the beaches are dog friendly with a few hours in the morning between 5-8am and the arvo 4-8pm dogs off leash. All other times dogs must be on leash.

Alas we only saw blue sky on our first day, with overcast and rain for the next 3 days. But the flies were a lot less.

The pink lake is a Clayton’s pink lake, the pink lake you have when you don’t have a pink lake. Apparently is used to be a bubblegum pink.

Water, more precious than gold, is what the sign states at the old Dundas Dam. Dundas faced the same problem as many early goldfields towns, the lack of clean water.

Dundas Dam was really fascinating with harvest rain falling on the rocky outcrop and then being channelled into the dam below. The rocks above were a spectacular site and great to climb up the rocky ground to explore them. It is well worth the short detour of the main road to explore giant granite boulders.

Not far from the dam was the old township of Dundas. All that is left is a few sign posts. Like many gold towns it had a hotel, blacksmith shop, Methodist church, Stores and houses. A school was planned it was starting to come to life. But in 1894 gold was discovered at Norseman, richer finds so the focus turned to Norseman and Dundas became a ghost town.

We docked for the night at Bromus Dam, a large are about 200m off the road. Heaps of room around a small dam. There is a toilet and some bins.
